Creating a New Hedgerow with the Sussex Wildlife Trust

In late January a group of pupils and their families worked with the support of Rich Howorth from the Sussex Wildlife Trust (SWT) to create a new hedgerow on farmland near Fernhurst, West Sussex. The hedgerow will grow to create a wildlife corridor linking two existing areas of woodland. The planting forms part of the SWT’s West Weald Landscape Project.

The school took along around 80 saplings from their School Tree Nursery; Oak, Wild Service, Hawthorn and Hazel to plant alongside others from the Sussex Wildlife Trust. In all around 200 saplings were planted. Several of them; Oak and Wild Service, will be allowed to grow to full height along the length of the hedgerow.

This is the third year that Thomas A Becket Middle School has worked with the Sussex Wildlife Trust.
